Visiting Vatican City on Tuesday in Sep?

Hello Folks,
I am finally starting to lay out things for our 5 day trip to Rome. Can we visit Vatican city on Tuesday? Should we give it a whole day? Should we go early in the morning? What time? Rick Steves book says it can take whole day, but practically, should we be done visiting and learning as much by lunch? We are taking baby with us. I hope there are restrooms somewhere!!

Tuesday should be fine. Typically I would say give it an entire day, but with baby along you might have to break it up or cut back. The Vatican Museum is huge and could take a whole week! St. Peter's is also large and could probably be done in an hour if not climbing the dome or going down into the crypt. If you dash through the museum to the Sistine Chapel, you could be done by lunch but it'd be a bit of a march and you'd miss most of the other treasures the museum has to offer.

We went in the morning, but it was November and off season. If you are going to just do the highlights, you would probably be better off to go in the afternoon. There are restrooms at the beginning of the museum and there might also be one in St. Peter's square by the post office but I can't remember for sure.

Tuesday is a great day to visit the vatican.

I don't know if I would give it a whole day but if you start early it will take all the morning and a good part of the afternoon.

You can book a tour of the museums or entrance tickets at the vatican website. This will allow you to bypass the lines. After the tour you can go directly into the basilica without waiting in the line. You'll probably want to spend at least an hour inside the basilica. After that you can go outside to see the square. I don't recommend climbing the dome with a baby but you can if you wish.

If you get an early morning tour or entry tickets you can see all these things in about 4.5 to 5 hours depending on how much time you spend in the chapel and in the square (and not climbing the dome).
