Do not take a tour to walk around Stonehenge. You can walk around the site by yourself. There is a path that you follow. You can read the information about Stonehenge on the web and download any information. If you are in London and area long enough, buy the Great Heritage Pass. Stonehenge is covered. I belive the Roman Baths are on the pass also. Or, skip Stonehenge and go to Bath for a day. It's wonderful and you can walk to all the sites. Go to the Roman Baths, go to an evensong at the Cathedral. Stay at Woodville B&B with Anne Toalster within walking distance of downtown Bath. You can take a train from Paddington Train Station to Bath. Try to spend the night in Bath...

"If we do it ourselves should we take the bus or train?"You'll need both train and bus, train to Salisbury and then a hop on hop off bus to Stonehenge. That's the only way to do it by public transport. For a more detailed description of how to get to Stonehenge by public transportation, see the first reply under this recent discussion of the same question: http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/27298/stonehenge-without-a-guide.html
