We plan to spend 15 nights in Tuscany/Umbria in mid-October, using Siena, Montepulciano and Montefalco as our bases. Our interests are primarily in architecture, ambiance, history, wine, and food
Here's what we've worked out so far.
Arrive in Rome and take a bus directly to Siena. Spend 5 nights in Siena with Florence, San Gimignano, and Volterra as possible day trips via bus/train. On our last day in Siena we'll rent a car and head for Monetpulciano where we'll spend 4 or 5 nights. Day trip possibilities from here include Montalcino, Pienza, Castiglione, and Cortona. Move on to Montefalco for 4-5 nights. Day trips from here might be Spoleto, Terni, Spello, and Bavagna. Drop the car in Terni and catch a train to Rome where we'll spend the night before departing.
We would appreciate some guidance and suggestions regarding the following:
- Is a bus to Siena the best way to go? If so, is the bus difficult to find?
- Do the time allocations in our bases make sense?
- Any suggestions on where to find interesting ruins?
- Is Terni our best bet for returning the car (it will be a weekday)?
- Suggestions on where to stay in Rome that is close to the airport?
- Best way to get to the airport?
