How best to reach the ruins of Stabiae Villa? Does the Circumvesuviana train have a station near to it? How about a bus from Pompei town? I'd like to avoid the expense of a taxi, and it's too far to walk. What do you recommend? It's not covered in Rick's book "Naples and the Amalfi Coast." Thanks!
A few years ago I looked for it but never found it, and that was in my own car.
The roads in the vicinity were not good. I know I was close - there was one sign and nothing further, but I decided I didn't like the look of the road with my car and I wasn't sure either of the neighborhood, so I gave up.
I hope you have better luck than me.
I was staying just a short distance away, on the beach at Castellammare di Stabiae, and loved that area.
Thank you, Nigel. VERY interesting! I'll keep looking and post any info that pops up. There's supposed to be some beautiful wall paintings that I'd love to see....
I tried to visit a few years ago when admission was part of my Campania Arte card. I took the Circumvesuviana to Stabia but wasn't able to figure out how to get to the villa. Based on some additional research, I think a bus ride might be required. If you figure it out, please let us know how to get there. I'd love to visit.
I wonder if this is any help to you:

You didn't ask, but Villa Oplontis is a very short walk from its Circumvesuviana stop, and a nice visit for those with extra time after the bigger attractions. I also recommend it for those without the stamina or knees to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum.

Excellent suggestions! Although I won't have a car, I found some Google Earth driving instructions from Pompei town to Stabia Villa, as follows:
Head south on Via Antonio Morese toward Via Sant’Abbondio.
At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and stay on Via Antonio Morese, which passes over the train tracks, then becomes Cavalcavia del Sarno.
At next major intersection, Turn right onto Via Provinciale Ripuaria.
At the roundabout, take the first exit and stay on Via Ripuaria.
Turn Right (north) onto Strada Ponte della Persica/Strada Statale 145. This road turns Right two more times, like a freeway on-ramp, ultimately heading South again on Strada Statade 145.
Slight right onto Corso Italia/SS145 dir (signs for Castellammare Centro).
At roundabout, take third exit to stay on Corso Italia. This is where the driving instructions stop.
The Stabia Villa overlooks a bluff above the town and is accessed from the East on Strada Provinciale Varano Scavi di Stabia.
However, the Via Nocera train station (not Circumvesuviana train) is close, but right at the bottom of the bluff that Scavi Stabia sits upon. Perhaps it's possible to walk from here, but a taxi might be the best option. Google Maps suggests walking South onto Viale Puglia, then turning Left on Str. Varano. The Villa is the third driveway on the Left. Of course you must then return to the train station. Sounds like a half-day excursion at least. Sure wish I had a bus map of this area.

The archeology-travel.com website was tremendously helpful. Thank you! Multiple photos and a map showing how to walk to the Stabiae from the Nocera train station. They probably don't have a lot of visitors because of their location, but the wall paintings are beautiful. Sure hope they're open in April 2019!
trip report on return, please.....
good luck and happy travels!!
