visiting The Last Supper in Milan

I have Rick's Italy 2012. We will visit Milan in Sept 2017. I visited the website per the book to purchase tickets to The Last Supper. But the booking opening for July and August isn't until 19 April, and there's no mention of when I can buy tickets for Sept. I will keep checking back, but in case I miss the window (I see there is no availability for June, for example), I was wondering if anyone can recommend a tour company who can get us in (and skip the line, if that is relevant) and take us to a few other sites as well. That worked for us in Rome, and we are willing to go in a small group or a private tour (2 of us).

You should really consider buying an updated book. There's a reason they are reissued each year - Things change.

Good luck.

The website updates with the date of when tickets go on sale. I've seen posts about recommended tours. Try a search in the top of the page. Some dates are gone as soon as tickets become available.

You can buy a ticket from a broker without a tour for about twice the ticket's face value. PM me if you want a recommendation.

In late 2013 I took a 3-hour, afternoon Milan walking tour with Dark Rome Tours, and I see they still offer it. Included the Duomo (inside and outside, but not the roof), a pass through the Galleria, a walk through the Brera District including passing by the exterior of La Scala and the Castello, then ending at the church where The Last Supper is. The group spends 15 minutes in the anteroom (dehydrating?) and then 15 minutes with the painting. Fine tour, nothing special I would say, but it does get you in to see The Last Supper with no waiting in line. I'm sure other companies offer similar tours.

Regarding the official tour tickets, know that getting them is not easy. I started trying to book my desired day/time at 3 am (9 am in Italy) the day tickets were released for June, and it took me till 5:30 to get it done. Meanwhile, the availability information on the website was changing minute by minute. Sometimes it would look like everything was sold out, and the next minute it would show availability ... that is, until you tried to actually buy a ticket, even one they said was available. It made me wonder if calling would be easier, but then I guess you'd be fighting to get through, or sitting on hold for long periods of time, instead of competing with all the other website users.

I had never been to Italy, let alone Milan. But I went solo in May 2016. I did know to get advance ticket to Last Supper though. I used Select Italy as the provider. Price was same as "direct" and I didn't want a guide or other extras. No issues with entrance time and they were great to work with in this and other transactions. I took high-speed train from Florence to Milan and stayed at a nice hotel near the train station. Just outside the train station is a hop-on/hop-off stop. The 22E cost was for 48 hours. I bought a ticket from a vendor at the station and hopped on. There are 3 lines and I rode them all the first day to get my bearings (before I started getting on/off at my favorite stops). Next day, I took hop-on to closest stop by Last Supper, entered at the assigned time, went through all the chambers to gain access to the painting and then ... incredible. You are allowed 15 minutes, no leaving early either, to view. I knew the story about Jesus' feet, but to actually see that arch! Anyway, I jumped back on the hop-on and still am in awe of what I saw that day!

purdid, I just checked Select Italy, and the Last Supper tickets are almost double the cost of buying direct. ($24 as opposed to €12.) Still cheaper than booking a Milan tour, however. We booked a tour in case we weren't able to get tickets directly, and sure enough, when I checked the morning they became available, there was only one ticket available the four days we're going to be in Milan.

I did check availability on Select Italy, and they have a few slots open. I may book through them and cancel our City Wonders tour. Thanks for the suggestion.

I use Select Italy often (rather than spend a lot of time trying to purchase direct), and I recall the charge is about double the face value. 12E is worth it in sleep to me.

We recently lived in Milano for five months and the day we wanted to go see The Last Supper exhibit we arrived before 8:00 am and we got "unsold" tickets for that day, even though we were told the tickets are sold out. We did this several different times for friends of ours and never had problems getting tickets. This may be an option for you if you are having problems getting tickets.
