Visiting the DodgePalace in Venice

I just read about the expected exceptionally high crowds expected in Italy this summer. In Steves' 2014, the recommended Correr Museum as a never crowded source for a ticket to the Doge's Palace. Safe to wait, or due to busy season (we are visiting the first week in July), should be buy online?
Our travel party includes 4 adults and 2 children ages 4 and 6. Mindful of the flexibility we will need to accommodate our grandchildren's needs, we do not wish to spend much time in museums. We would prefer using our 2 days with freedom to explore Venice's waterways and back streets.
We have prearranged our San Marco Basilica entrance at 14:05 (2:05). If you recommend online arrangements for the Doge's Palace, should we try to go back to back, around 15:00 (3:00), and how much time is reasonable for exploring the Basilica and the Palace?
Thank you for your recommendations, Vicki

You might want to explore the Secret Itinerary's Tour of the Doge's Palace. It's a great tour and includes tickets to the Palace.

I have read about this option, but with our grandchildren, I am thinking we would not be able to stick with a tour guide. We will do that when we return on our own.

Just was in Venice. We went directly to the doge's palace when it opened and got right in first thing in the morning. No crowds inside until about an hour later when the cruise tours showed up. It was a great place. We loved it!

I think that an hour is enough time for your party to see San Marco. You are not allowed to sit in wonderment, but are fairly well herded along a path, especially if it's crowded. Or if you booked the next Doge's entry, then the time between might be time that you spend circumnavigating the large piazza and playing with pigeons.

Wonderful. We will head there for an 8:30 AM entrance, unless others recommend the late in the day time which may also bypass the tour group crowds (after 4:00). It might also be a good time to escape the heat for a while. Thank you, again.
