Visiting the Colosseum in Rome

We will be visiting Rome next month. We plan to visit the Colosseum. Can you get tickets that include the lower area below the arena?

Thanks!

Probably not at this point, or at least not through the official website. All you can do is see what's on sale for your desired date.

Tickets for the Colosseum underground tours (you can't visit that area on your own) are THE most in-demand tickets in Rome, and sell out quickly as soon as they become available. If you can't land them through the official website, there are independent companies that sell them for premium prices, and you're not assured that they actually have the tickets they're selling.

There have been tons of past threads on this subject. IMHO? You can see down into parts of the underground from above. I don't personally think it's worth the effort some people go to - including staying up half the night - to try and land tickets that can sell out in minutes.

There is one option that you can consider if you are in Rome through the 22nd October, you could look into purchasing a night tour. Sometimes the night tours are extended, so check the Colosseum ticketing site. They are on Tuesday and Thursday nights and go below the arena. The tickets go sale 7 days in advance on the official Colosseum web site for the day of the tour. These are very small group tours, 60 minutes capped at 25 people. I was not fast enough to get the tours when I was there in September, but if you are, this is an option. I can't really tell what my mistake was, but I believe that instead of booking 7 days advance on the day, I tried to book at the exact time. By time I got in they were sold out.

The other option is to look at purchasing underground tour by Colosseum sanctioned tour companies. The Parco archeologico del Colosseo does not maintain a static, permanently viewable master list, you can check their social media or I believe the latest list is from June.

Check with the tour guide before booking. Since tickets have to have your names on them, this is one way to cross-check that they are valid.

As I'd mentioned above, there are independent companies that sell underground tours. The issue with those has been that they sell the tickets BEFORE they actually have them, and cancellations have occurred when they don't get hands on them. Some better-known companies have quit selling them altogether. The start time of the booked tour may also change, per this from one of the indy companies that still conduct them:

Is it possible The Tour Guy will change this tour time?
Yes, it is very likely to happen due to the exclusive nature of this tour. We recommend you keep your entire day open to accommodate your new tour time. Be sure to monitor your email as we will contact you at least 14 days before the tour with any new start time.
