Visiting St. Peter's Basilica

Hi,

I will be with my family Sat afternoon-Monday in Rome. I was planning on visiting St. Peter's on Monday morning but looking in the Rick Steve's book it looks like there might be masses going on at that time. Does anyone know if Monday morning is a good time to visit? It will be April 30th, the day before Labor Day.

Thanks!

Meghan

St. Peter's is open every day at 7:00 am, according to this website: https://www.rome.net/st-peters-basilica
I've heard on Rick Steves' podcasts that it's best to get there before 10:00, because that's when the tour groups can be allowed in. Here's another good website with info: https://www.walksofitaly.com/blog/vatican/visiting-st-peters-basilica
There are masses throughout the day, every day so just plan to get there as early as possible.

St Peter's is a very large place, as the yardstick on the floor showing how much bigger they are than just about anywhere else will tell you.

The masses are in various side chapels or behind the baldacchino so while large numbers of people attend the various masses it does not make a big dent in sightseeing.

The sounds of the mass add to the spiritual qualities of the visit.
