Looking to spend a few days in the south-east corner of Sicily in July. Would like to spend some time in Noto, Ragusa, possibly Modica. They seem to be similar. What would be a good base? Is it advised to visit from Siracusa or move around for accommodations?
Will you have a rental car? I suggest you get one.
Stay at an agriturismo. Below is one where I stayed. Great food and great beach too. It's next to Avola. Minutes from Siracusa and Noto. And not far from Modica and Ragusa either.
I visited the towns you listed as day trips from Siracusa, using public transportation. A car would be more convenient.
If you plan to rent a car, then I think it's just a personal preference, whether to have one base or not.
I loved staying in Ortigia and at the beginning of May it was easy to find parking (definitely not high season, though). While it was a 10-15 minute drive from there to the highway to go other places, I liked being in the oldest part of town and right on the water. It was worth it to me to drive for an another hour or more each day and not to live out of a suitcase, find a different hotel (and parking) every day, etc.
The Cathedral of Noto for sure!
