We would like to use trains as much as possible. We plan to train from Rome to Salerno, seems to be a high speed train there that by passes Naples(??) Is there train service from Salerno to Sorrento? Is it possible to train from Sorrento/Salerno to Paestum? (This site has been a terrific help planning our 3 week trip, thanks to all!)
Susan
We spent 5 nights in Sorrento in April. I looked at potentially taking the train to Salerno or Paestum, them taking train to Sorrento. After reading many posts here, just sounded too complicated with limited schedules, changing trains, and hauling luggage. To get to Sorrento from Solerno, here are the options I came up with: 1) take the train back to Naples, then Circumvesuvia from Naples to Sorrento. (Long way around the barn) 2) Take the train to Pompei, and walk about a mile to the circumvesuvia stop near the Pompei ruins. (too much with luggage) 3) Take the bus from Solerno up the Amalfi coast to Sorrento (husband would have been car sick) 4) Rent a car in Salerno, drive to Paestum, then drive to Sorrento and drop off the car. (too much driving) 5) Stay in Sorrento- take the train to either Naples or Pompei and catch train to Paestum and then back (limited options and too much time on a train)
5) So we decided to spend all 5 nights in Sorrento, then had a taxi (Raffaele Monetti) drive from Sorrento along the Almalfi coast with stops in Positano, Almalfi, then to Paestum and back to Sorrento. Made for a long day, but no driving, luggage, and got to see Paestum, which was well worth it.
Hi Karen...thanks very much for the detailed reply. Mu husband (who readily gets car sick) and I laughed a lot at your decisions. We feel the same way about the routes, long train rides, luggage struggle. We may try hiring a driver. Did your husband get car sick on the Amalfi drive? We are also considering a ferry from Salerno to Sorrento, although if the ferry does not run we would likely have to rent a car last minute and make the long drive to Sorrento. Did you find that 5 days was too long in Sorrento without a car? Molte grazie!
