Visiting Sondrio province in Lombardy - Campodolcino and Madesimo

We will be arriving in Milan by train on a Tuesday in July, and must return to Milan on Friday. During that interval we want to visit Campodolcino and Madesimo in the Sondrio province of Lombardy, where our family lived before they came to live in the U.S. It appears to me that our best option would be to travel by train to Lecco, rent a car there, and then drive to the towns that we want to visit. What do you think of that plan for transportation? Would you recommend something different, and if so, what would you recommend? My guess is that we will be arriving in Lecco toward the end of the day. Given that, it seems that it makes most sense to spend the night in Lecco and pick up the car the next morning. That way I save a day of car rental fees, and avoid trying to park my car in places like Varenna which I understand can be difficult/expensive to do. Do you have a recommendation for a hotel in Lecco? Thank you for your advice, it is much appreciated!
