If you'll be in Rome for three days, look into the Roma Pass.

You mention the Roma Card? We have the OMNI card, which is the Vatican pass and the Roma pass in one. I am unsure how I make reservations for things like the colosseum when the pass makes it free.... Any ideas?

No reservation needed (except for the Borghese Gallery). You just walk in. That is the beauty of the Roma Pass.

So is Roma Pass good for entry fee into the Vatican as well as Colosseum? Any transportation options with the Roma Pass? What is the cost and time frame?

Don't waste your money on the omnia card. It's not worth the cost and you must squeeze every site in Rome and at the Vatican into a short three day period. Just purchase the romapass and pay for entry to the Vatican museums separately.

You can buy the romapass once in Rome. There is no advantage to buying it online ahead of time as the cost is the same. The romapass gives you the first two sites for free and discounts for all other sites covered by the pass for three days. It also comes with free transportation for the three days. It doesn't include anything at the Vatican, but you can book that yourself for much less than the cost of the Omnia pass. The romapass costs 34 euros the omnia card costs 90 euros. The entry fee to the Vatican museums is 20 euros including the reservation fee. Also, there are discounts at the Vatican for those under 18 and students up to age 26 that are not covered by the omnia pass. With the omnia card you are limited to which sites you can use as your free sites, there is no such limit with the romapass. The official site for the romapass is: http://www.romapass.it/?l=en

As for how to make reservations using the pass, you don't need them for the colosseum. Just show up. You can bypass the lines. If you wish to take a tour of the colosseum that won't be covered by the pass and you must call the colosseum official number to book the tour. If you plan on visiting the Borghese gallery you must reserve your slot ahead of time. You must call to do this.

All in all, the omnia pass is not worth the money, not only because it costs so much but because it doesn't give you enough time to visit all the sites needed to make the pass worth the money. You are better off with the romapass and booking your tickets to the Vatican on your own. Before buying either pass check to make sure that they are going to save you money. Most people have a difficult time making the romapass pay off, let alone a 90 euros pass. Unless you visit three or more sites covered by the romapass and use public transportation several times then the pass won't save you money. If you just want the pass in order to bypass the lines, you don't need that either. You can book entry tickets to the colosseum or the Vatican museums and that allows you to bypass the lines. No pass required for this.

Thank you Donna. My husband and I plan to be in Rome 3-4 days early May. We will be using trains to travel from Venice, Florence, Rome (and places in-between) Is rail there a rail pass available and would it save money?

Are any of the entry tickets to main museums, sites that require pre-purchase to avoid lines recommended to be purchased before actual travel. What about problems with availability if we wait until we are actually in Rome?

Hi Nora, Just buy point to point tickets for the train. A rail pass in Italy never saves you money and there are additional fees that must be paid for booking seats. Use the official trenitalia site for booking tickets. You can book 4 months in advance and save tons of money. These tickets are non -refundable and non-changeable so be sure of your travel plans before buying them.

Be sure to enter the Italian city names such as Roma termini, Firenze S.M. Novella and Venezia S.L. Change the date and the travel time as the time will default to the time you are browsing so you might not see all the options.

For entry tickets, I suggest getting colosseum combo tickets before leaving home. You can book at their official site.

http://www.coopculture.it/en/colosseo-e-shop.cfm

Click on "acquista" to book your tickets. Use the print at home option.

You'll also want to book tickets to the Vatican museums if you plan to visit them. The lines there can be hours long. You can book tickets or a tour at their official site:

http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do

All of these tickets allow you to bypass the lines. If you wait until you get to Rome you'll wait in lines that could be 2 hours or more at either site. These are the most popular sites in Rome (technically the Vatican is not in Rome) so pre-purchasing tickets will be a huge time saver.
