We're trying to make a quick stop on our train travels to visit Pisa. Is it better to do it while traveling from Venice to Florence? Or from Florence to Rome? Or, some other way that I'm not thinking about. My husband basically just wants to get off and see the leaning tower--it's a bucket list item from when he was a kid.
My guess is that Venice to Florence is too far out of the way to include Pisa - You'd have to change in Florence anyway.
You can do Pisa to Rome , but it takes 4 hours. For more money you can do the journey in just under three - but again, you are backtracking via Florence.
We're in Florence for 3 nights. We travel from Venice to Florence on a Tuesday, have all day Wednesday and Thursday in Florence, and then travel to Rome on Friday.
The train journey from Firenze SMN (the main station in Florence) to Pisa S.Rossare (the station next to the Campo dei Miracoli) is doable in 1 hour and 10 minutes. I seem to be in a minority in that I really like Pisa, and if it is important to your husband, I'd probably make the trip. You can combine it with Lucca if you want to make a day of it - But you don't have a lot of time in Florence and you may feel it is a waste.
It's definitely worth a quick visit if it's a bucket list item. We made a short stop on the way from Cinque Terre to Florence and it was well worth it for my husband, since he'd always wanted to see the Leaning Tower. We had lunch at a local pizzeria and then walked to the Field of Miracles, took a few snaps, visited the Cathedral, and then ambled back to the train station. I enjoyed seeing the lively squares and elegant architecture, as well as the gritty and bustling streets. The Keith Haring mural was also worth seeing, just a couple of blocks from the train station across the plaza.
