We will be in Parma at the end of May for 3 nights. We will have only one full day to spend in the city (another day will be spent in Modena). We would like to learn more about Parmigiano Reggiano and Parma ham. Your suggestions will be welcome.
And if there are some "don't miss" sites or restaurants, please let us know. BTW, public transportation only, no car.
Thanks in advance.
Hi, a “don’t miss” site for me is the interior of the Parma Cathedral. It’s stunning! I returned to Parma just to see it more than once.
I like “La Forchetta” restaurant.
We are doing a private Food Tour with Laura, as recommended by travelers on this forum. It may be an option for you. https://www.foodtours.it/
My jaw dropped when I saw the Farnese Theater in Parma. It's part of the Palazzo della Polotta complex. Never saw anything like it.
Another strong recommendation for the Duomo interior and also the Baptistry next to the Duomo.
During my daytrip, I enjoyed lunch at Trattoria del Tribunale.
Check with the local Tourist Information center to see if they still offer walking tours. Ours included the stunning Cathedral and baptistry. We learned a lot from our guide that we would have missed on an independent visit.
Don’t miss the gelato shop Ciacco. They have all sorts of interesting flavors.
We had a nice lunch at the Il Trovatore restaurant.
We also loved Trattoria del Tribunale! It was one of the best meals we had on our trip around Emilia-Romagna which is saying a lot. Also agree that the duomo and baptistry are two of the main highlights.
Thank you to everyone for your replies.
My favorite short day trip from Parma was to the castle of Torrechiara --- I think we took a bus there and a taxi back. It's half an hour by taxi.
Great 15th castle, not full of more modern furniture and stuff the way some castles are. Well-preserved frescoes covering the walls and ceilings, different in every room. Secular themes, many in the fanciful grotesque style popular at the time: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/torrechiara-fresco.html?sortBy=relevant
Views over the countryside. Good restaurant next to the castle --- I think it was Ristorante Taverna del Castello.
