Visiting Lucca on way to CT from Florence

My wife and I thought the bikeride on top of the old protective walls of Lucca sounded like a very cool thing to do. Has anyone done this? Our plan, if we decide to include Lucca, would be to leave Florence earlier in the day, stop off in Lucca, and then continue on to Vernazza in the CT. Has anyone else done this? What travel method do we use - Train, Bus, combination of the two? Thanks

You would take the train. About 1.5 hours Florence to Lucca and then about 2 hours from Lucca to Vernazza with a couple of train changes depending on the route. www.trenitalia.com

The bike ride is fun. Looking down into the city gives you a different perspective. We rented the bikes for an hour or two and made two leisurely loops around.

I believe there is also frequent bus service between Florence and Lucca. When you get to Lucca, there won't be luggage storage at the train station, but you can take your bags to the tourist info office and leave them there.

Biking Lucca is fun. The train station is only a couple hundred yards from a gate into the city. Here are some links that I put into my Evernote file for Lucca that might interest you: Someone's detailed account of biking the wall, and the town: http://www.lkjh.org/bike/tuscany/north/lucca/index.html Someone's YouTube of biking the wall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttnjSL3LdRY I got a sandwich at a mom/pop deli in the Piazza Anfiteatro which is a good place for atmosphere http://www.italyguides.it/us/italy/tuscany/lucca/squares/piazza-dell-anfiteatro.htm I was there in a March (no crowds) so I have no idea whether there are crowds in other times of the year. I would definitely visit Lucca again. fyi a good bit of Lucca is on GMaps Street View
