Would the first 2 1/2 weeks in November be a pleasant time to visit Italy ?

In the north no. The south/Sicily it would probably be better but I wouldn't bet on pleasant.

Last year we went at the end of November. We experienced temps between 20-65 degrees. Of course, warmer in the south. Rome was our warmest destination. Layers is the key.

Weather aside, it will be a great time. Far fewer tourists. IMO, the off season gives one a far more accurate view of the true charm of the area in question. In general, Rome is still only " sweater " weather in early November.

Better chance of rain, but less crowds. To me that's a fair trade. But I really think these things come down to what you're used to. I live in Seattle where it rarely gets above 80 with almost no humidity (when the rare 90 degree day hits we all wilt where we stand). So no matter where I go or when, it always seems to feel warm to me. Conversely, I've had friends from NYC that visited here in mid August and they freeze their butts off. Also, since I'm so used to rain it rarely bothers me when I travel (heck, half the time I don't even notice it's raining). Someone from LA would obviously handle it differently.

I have been to Northern Italy in Sept and it poured rain. I have been in Florence and Palma in November and it was spectacular. Driving from the East coast to west was awesome. The fall colors were beautiful. It was cool but not freezing.

I've been in Venice and Rome in November, several times. The upside is that there were no lines to anything, I just walked in. The downside is that the weather was a crap shoot: likely storms with a few days of sun and then another storm. I like Venice in the rain, it seems to fit the city. Rome, more of a walking city, very spread out, is less user friendly in the rain, but still worth it. I'd trade November for August anytime.

November is the only time I've ever been to Italy and I love it! I start in the north and work my way south. I've had a couple of days with misting rain but that's it. (I know that I have now jinxed my trip this year.) The trade off with any possible rain is: 1) much less crowded;2) much less expensive since rates are usually quite a bit lower after Oct. 31; 3) much cooler which I prefer since I can add clothes but only take off just so much. Some places, like the Vatican Museum, will always be crowded. I don't make reservations for the museums in Florence and only had to wait 10 minutes for the Accademia once. Every other time I walked right in while people with reservations stood in line. Take a few of the $1 disposable ponchos. Watch the weather and plan museum visits around rainy days. Most of all, if you do run into bad weather, don't let it slow you down. Have a great trip!
