Visiting Florence the first Sunday of the month....oh no...

We will be in Florence late Saturday, May 4th through the 7th. I read that museum are free for some on the first Sunday and to just stay away. Unfortunately, if I want to see the Duomo Museum, due to other commitments, it will have to be on the 5th( since it is closed the first Tuesday of the month.) UGH! I can purchase a ticket ahead of time on line for the Museum, Baptistry, bell tower, but wonder how crazy the lines will still be and the crowd inside. Anyone know how busy the first Sundays are? Should I do the Palazzo Vecchio museum & tower instead? or just plan on walking around eating gelato?

The duomo museum isn't an Italian state museum so free days don't apply there. :O)
You'll be good with an advance ticket.

Just FYI, first Sundays are no longer free at most, if not all, Italian state museums during high season. This is a recent change. In addition to free Sundays during the slower seasons, they each have 8 days to use at their discretion so you have to check the websites for each to see when those are.

Kathy,
THANK YOU! I just purchased my tickets. I see that it is good for 72 hours so I can manipulate what I see when. So glad I'm going to the Duomo Museum. I had to put names on the tickets, do you know if we had to show some type of ID?

Arg. I'm afraid I don't have an answer for that but tourists are supposed to have legal ID on them at all times so to be safe, I would have your passports with you.

I don't like having my passport handy to show, because it also makes it handy to steal. I always use my driver's license for ID purposes, including proof of age, and never had a problem.

I would agree, Chani. It's just that the passport thing has been a heated topic (such as it is said to be the only legal ID for tourists) so I just chose not to step in it! :O).

We don't always carry ours daily either; depends on our sightseeing plan.
