Visiting Dolomites in Summer from Venice

I am visiting Venice in the second week of June. I was able to book a budget accommodation only for one night in Venice. I would reach Venice on 12th June 10 am and plan to spend 12th and 13th whole days there to see things Venice and also visit Burano, Merano. After that, I was wondering how should I plan my itinerary for 14th - 16th: on 16th night, 10 pm I fly for India from Milan. I was wondering if I can utilize this time to visit dolomites. We like to see more of landscapes and cultures than museums and hence thought dolomites could be a good experience.

Which places should we stay in for visiting dolomites? Alta badla, castelrotto or Bolzano? Any others?
Is hiring a car recommended or we can visit places through public transports too?
Any other suggestions other than dolomites we could spend our time in?

Take the train from Venezia Santa Lucia station to Bolzano. You will change trains at Verona Porta Nuova. There is a good connection leaving Venice at 8:20, with 17 minutes to change trains at Verona, and arriving Bolzano at 11:17.

At Bolzano you can either rent a car or take the bus service into the Dolomites. If you are willing to drive, you will have more flexibility, but the SAD bus service is also good. I suggest you head to Val Gardena and stay in one of the villages there; it is closer and simpler than Val Badia. Castelrotto is at the base of the mountains, not right in them. Stay two nights in one place.

On the 16th, if you are driving, you can simply drive the car to Milan and turn it in at the airport. If traveling by SAD bus, return to Bolzano and take the Trenitalia train from there to Milan.
