Traveling across Italy in a VW camper, it will not be possible to take all belongings with us or leave them in a hotel. Where a secured campground is not available, is it reasonably safe to leave a locked camper in a parking area at an outer suburb train station to visit larger cities in Italy? Are there parking areas with security services to help prevent vehicle break-ins? Do you have any suggested parking areas at train stations for visiting Venice, Florence, Rome and Milan?
It's not reasonably safe to leave a camper as you want. You'll need a secure parking facility and not just one that promotes video surveillance. It should have restricted, guarded access.
Leaving belongings unattended inside a vehicle is never a good idea anywhere. Most parking lots have surveillance cameras but those are useless. My office building in Oakland has plenty of cameras and even security guards patrolling with a golf cart, also because it houses a branch of the State DA’s office as well the Oakland headquarters of the TSA, yet they have weekly break-ins. They don’t even care about the police cars or the TSA vans parked in the lot. Milan is the most dangerous city in Italy, although very safe compared to anywhere in America, but you cannot be guaranteed there will be no break-ins. They are not as frequent as in America but they do occasionally happen.

Thank you both. While we cannot pack everything in the car with us while visiting a larger city, I located a campground in Sesto Calenda at the southeast end of Lake Maggiore for visiting Milan. It's about 1 hour by train. The campground manager says they have had no incidents of car vandalism at the campground. There's a bus from the campground to a train station with connections to Milan. Let m know if you have had vehicle vandalism at managed campgrounds and thank you for raising the issue that even secured parking areas do not provide sufficient security.
