I’m planning a family trip to Avellino and surrounding towns. Wondering where you would suggest as a home base and places to visit. We’re planning on Amalfi coast also. Planning for 10days. If we have time would love to go to Florence a few days. Do you think a car is necessary? Best airport to fly into. Thanks for any hints.

For 10 days, adding Florence is getting yourself stretched pretty thin. Might work if you fly into Naples and out of Florence. Not really the best choices of airports for favorable fares.
For 10 days, in/out of Naples and stay in the south region is the way to go.

If you include Florence in your trip you will spend more time getting there and less time being there.
We've stayed in the Avellino area twice in a mountain top town called Nusco. My neighbor let us stay in his house a few times and we were about 1.5 hours from Pompeii and and the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento was about an hour away.
IMHO, save Florence for another trip.
