Visiting Alberobello from Naples by Car for a day trip

I am planning to go Naples this summer in June and after spending 2 days there, I was wondering if we could visit Alberobello. After Naples, we had planned to go to Rome. So instead of returning to Naples, we are contemplating if we can drop our rental car at Bari and take a train to Rome from there. So question is, whether the following is doable:

  • Early morning leave for Alberobello by car from Naples. After driving for 4hours, spend a few hours in Alberobello
  • Leave for Bari around 3 pm
  • Catch the evening 6 pm train from Bari to Rome.

I have found google maps etc to be too optimistic regarding travel time.

I usually add 20% to give myself a safety margin and not be tempted to exceed the speed limit if I end up 'behind schedule'

Depending on how early you leave Naples, it looks like the best you could hope for is 4 hours there. You have to decide if that is worth the effort.

I wouldn't do it. That's very, very far away for a day-trip, and Alberobello is only one of many interesting places in Puglia. Why not plan to spend a week or so there on your next trip to Italy--ideally not in the summer, because it gets brutally hot there.

Don't forget how much time you may spend looking for parking in Alberobello, walking from your parking spot to trulli central, navigating to a car drop-off point in Bari and dealing with the rental agency. ViaMichelin (thought to be optimistic) estimates the pure driving time Naples-Alberobello-Bari at 5 hr. 12 min. The 6:14 PM Frecciargento train from Bari will not get you to Rome until 10:20 PM. (I checked the weekday schedule.)
