Please tell me if it's advisable to buy tickets to Vatican ahead of time. We'll be in Rome between May 10th and 15th.

You only need tickets to the Vatican museums. The basilica is free but you must go through a security line. There is no way to bypass this line unless you take a guided tour of the museums. If you plan to visit the Vatican museums then you should either book entry tickets or a tour. Both will allow you to bypass the hours long line that builds up in the morning.

Thank you both of you. I just followed the link and found and option "Night Openings 2016" to visit Vatican after sunset. It sound as a good option, does it?

It's a great option. Just be aware that not all of the galleries are open for the Friday night visits. Also, you'll need to visit the basilica before the night tour or on a different day if you plan to visit it.
