Visit to St. Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo

I have been to Italy many times, but for my trip this next summer I would like to visit the Shrine of St. Padre Pio in San Giovanni, which is on the east coast, about 180 miles from Rome. I wondered if there is anyone here who has done this trip from Rome, and what would be your suggestions for travel etc, if not having a car. I am in the planning stages for this part of the trip, and would like to stay for 2 nights, as near to his shrine as possible. I will be 72 years young then, and in pretty good shape, but once in a while problems with stiff hips. Thanks for any help you can give. ( trip planned for mid to late July 2014)

Naomi, there are many accommodations for pilgrims and visitors in San Giovanni Rotondo, generally run by religious houses. Check the San Giovanni Rotondo websites for info, or santasusanna.org for convent/monastery accommodations. You may be able to travel from Rome to SGRotondo but will probably have to change trains in Foggia.
