Visit to Piemonte - Alba or Bra?

Is Alba or Bra a better base for a 1-2 day visit to the area? We'll be arriving from Milan by train and are thinking that one of those cities will be convenient for arriving without a car. Would want a base with some sites to visit and options for places to eat within walking distance, but then we'll want to hire a taxi to visit some smaller nearby towns and hopefully a few vineyards. Any strong preferences between those two cities as a base?

Then we'll look for a car service to get to Malpensa on the 3rd day for our return flight. Any recommendations on that too?

Thanks!

Although many will tell you that you need a car, and I cannot disagree, I did have a brief successful stay in Alba, arriving by train and bus from Milan. The bus portion may have been due to track work, but confirm on Trenitalia.
We did not find any major sites in Alba but ate very very well and had a nice brief stay. If you are wine tasting and need a driver anyway, it sounds like a fine plan. I would inquire with the tourist office in advance about drivers though.
You could also consider Asti which is a larger town but close to a winery I like very much: https://www.braida.it/en/brachetto-dacqui/

We stayed in Bra a few years ago without a car. I picked it as the place the slow food movement started. There are no sites, per se, but it is a pleasant town, we spent a day in Alba and another in Cuneo, but we very much enjoyed eating in Bra. If you decide to,stay there, I have two great recommendations for dining so PM me.

BTW, Alba doesn’t really have sites but is bigger, very focused on truffles and wine. You will eat well there, too.

We are on our 5th trip to the Langhe and were in Bra yesterday. It is lovely, and has wonderful restaurants as mentioned previously. It is much less touristed than Alba. Alba though is more central to the Barolo and Barbaresco wine regions. From Alba it is a short drive to the towns of Barbaresco and Neive, both of which have nice restaurants and opportunities to visit wineries and nearby vineyards.

We've stayed in both. Alba would meet you requirements much better. Bra is a good base if you have a car, but aside from some architecturally wonderful churches, the other attractions are sedate.

Hi,

I haven't been to Bra but was in Alba for three days several years ago. Absolutely loved it. Took the train from Milan. It's beautiful and charming though it lacks some "wow" tourist attractions, it is worth it. I'm an oenophile, so I did a lot of wine tasting. Ate really well, too.

If you're looking for a wine tour/guide, try Evan Byrne at https://www.byrnevini.com/wine-tours/
He's an Englishman who moved to Piemonte years ago because he fell in love with the region, the wine and an American woman there. I used him for a full day tour of Barbaresco and Barolo and he was excellent: worth every penny.

Good luck
