Anyone recommend how to reach Fiesole from Florence. I know the "city" bus does go there but how often? Better to take the hop on/off bus? More bank for your buck? Visit in October so should be less tourists?
Thanks to all.

BJ,
The Hop On / Hop Off (Red) Buses in Florence have two routes, and one of them goes to Fiesole. You could certainly use one of those. How long were you planning to stay in Fiesole? If you're only planning on staying for a few hours, the Red Bus would probably be the best "bang for the buck" as you could return to Florence and continue touring on the same ticket.
Happy travels!
The No. 7 bus from the bus station adjacent to the main Florence train station goes to Fiesole. CLICK HERE to see schedule information. Or, as Ken says, you can take the HO/HO bus. Or, take a taxi for about 25Euro.
We stayed at Fiesole during our trip last month. The #7 bus runs frequent during the day (less than 20 minutes wait). Fiesole is the starting point so seat always available. Ticket 1.2 euro and a pretty ride thru the hillside.
Just returned from Italy. While in Florence we took the city bus #7 from the bus station to Fiesole. Very easy and they run quite often. You can also hop on a city bus to get to the bus station if you prefer.
Presumably you've bought the RS book on Florence. It contains all the details.
As another poster said, buses run very frequently to Fiesole. Not necessary to go to Santa Maria Novella--I think we got on the bus at Piazza San Marco--don't have a Florence map in front of me but you should check a guidebook for info. I don't know if there is ever a time when Fl is not filled with tourists. We were just there in May and it was very crowded but you will enjoy it regardless.
