Visit Roman Forum and Palatine Hill by Private Guide or Audio Guide?

Our family of 4 (2 adult children) will visit Rome in early June for the second time. In our first visit (2014) we took the official underground tour of Colosseum and then took a quick walk around Roman Forum (RF) and Palatine Hill (PH) since it was raining.

This time we would like to do some more in-depth tour of RF and PH. We find a private guide who will give our family 2.5 hour tour of these two places for 130 euro (the price does not include entrance tickets). I have Rick Steve’s audio guide for RF on my phone. I understand that you can also rent audio guide for PH for a few euros.

I know a private guide is better than the audio guides. I just wonder if it is worth the extra 100+ euros. Any personal experiences and opinions would be really appreciated.

Thanks very much for the help!

Do you mean 130 euro apiece or total for the 4 of you? And do you mean a truly private guide just for your family or a small-group tour that includes other visitors?

I just returned and I listened to Rick Steve’s audio guide at the Forum, colosseum, Vatican, Sistine chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. I was fine with it, you just follow the tour. Since you are going with a group maybe it’ll work better with a guide. Good luck and enjoy.

We just did a 4 day stay in Rome and the best thing we ever did was book two tours - the Colosseum, palintine hill and forum and then the Vatican City tour. Both through the Roman Guy tour company

It made it easy to navigate and to manage the crowds. Especially with children... the guides know how to best manage your time and to teach their audience. The audio tours can drag on and don’t deal with the crowds

In mid April we were surprised with the huge numbers in Rome and we had temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius

Enjoy!
