We'll be on a small ship cruise along the Amalfi coast in October. There are two options for excursions to Pompeii - from Sorrento on a Saturday afternoon or from Amalfi on a Tuesday morning. I'm leaning toward the Amalfi option, which still leaves time in the afternoon to see Amalfi. Appreciate feedback from those who have done either excursion.

The only discriminator should be the greatest amount of time spent at the Pompeii site. I am inclined to say that while Sorrento is much bigger than Amalfi, I would spend 30 minutes in Amalfi and then do much nicer Ravello on my own. It is nominally possible to do Pompeii on your own from Sorrento, but NOT from Amalfi. In the cruise stop a full day?
My Sorrento comment means that stands of limoncello, souveniers, and the same clothing boutiques you see everywhere do not make downtown Sorrento a compelling cruise port for me. Opinion. There are other things to do from Sorrento, but you need the confidence to be back for the boat departure!

Another consideration in October is the weather. If you don't have to book these until onboard, go with the day that has the best outlook.
Personally like the Tuesday option but not if its raining. The cobblestones in the site are extremely slick in the rain. Walking on them while wet is an adventure in itself.
