Could anyone suggest the best situation for this itinerary? We are leaving CT and going to visit friends in Compagna Montferrato and then flying out of Milan back to US. I though it might be good to see Turin on the way to Compagna Montferrato and possibly rent a car there. But I hear that it would be very expensive to rent in Turin and drop off in Milan. We could easily get a train to Turin from CT. My question centers around getting to and from Compagna Montferrata and the important of visiting Turin. TY in advance for any help!!
Sounds like a good plan - train from the Cinque Terre to Torino (about 3 1/2 hours) and pick up a car there for your visit in the smaller town. If your friends are at Casale Monferrato, they are about 40 miles east of Torino. Torino is not a destination we cover in our books, but makes an interesting stop for at least part of a day. Great "happy hour" drinks with generous appetizers!
It is possible to pick up and drop cars in different locations within the same country without major drop-off fees , so dropping the car at the Milan airport would work well. If you decide on a car, it's best to reserve ahead from the U.S. One company I've used several times is Auto Europe (autoeurope.com). You can call them to find out what that drop-off charge would be.
