Visa for Italy

Has anyone stayed in Italy longer than 30 days and gotten a visa for extended stay? Was it difficult?

Italy is a member of the Schengen Treaty. As an American citizen, you can stay up to 90 days in a 180 period without a visa.

If you are a US citizen you don't need a visa for stays up to 90 days (not just 30).
For stays above 90 days you will need a visa. Italian law does not contemplate stays over 90 days for tourism, therefore you will need to have some other reason (such as 'elective residence' or 'study' etc.). http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp
