I have plans that will take me to Italy, France and Spain over a four month period, starting May, 2014. Any hints about where to start to get a visa for multiple country stays in Europe?

All 3 EU member states mentioned are part of the Schengen zone, therefore a visa for one should work in all others. You should start with the nearest consulate. Los Angeles has consulates for all three countries mentioned (see below). http://www.conslosangeles.esteri.it/Consolato_LosAngeles http://www.exteriores.gob.es/subwebs/Consulados/LosAngeles/en/home/Paginas/Home_LA.aspx http://www.consulfrance-losangeles.org/ For a stay over 3 months you'll likely need a reason (not sure they would give a visa for over 90 days for tourism reason) and proof of having sufficient financial means.

Roberto is right about showing that you can support yourself. They're happy to have you as a tourist but are much stricter for immigrants or workers. It's been years since I needed to apply for a tourist visa but I think they want you to apply with the country you will spend the most time in.
