I have to admit, when I saw last season's episode of The Amazing Race with a stop in Vinci I thought I really want to go there! Don't intend to spend too much time there but I'm still surprised that I don't find much about it. It's not in RS's Italy book so maybe we can hope it won't be too crowded there? Anybody been there?
Yes, I've been there. Not huge crowds when I went (off season), although it not being listed in Rick's book only guarantees that you won't see people with blue books. It's a bigger town than some people are expecting. Leonardo was born in a house about a mile north of town and the Leonardo Museum is in the 11th century castle of the Counts Guidi opposite the parish church.
Rough Guide to Italy describes Vinci as 'a torpid little village that suffers from a surfeit of tour groups (especially at weekends).
