From Orta it looks like the train is routed to Milan, then on to Stresa or Varenna. Question, for a couple of days where to spend the time before flying out of Malpensa airport--Stresa? Varenna? or Milan? I have read the "lake" replies to Ellen Jan 10th. Thank you for your response.
We stayed in Baveno, just a few miles from Stresa, for a few days. We liked Lago Maggiore very much. You can take boats out to the Borromean islands to visit the elegant villas and gardens that belonged to that family. We also did a day trip to Locarno; and, of course, visited Stresa.
After 2 weeks of smaller towns, it might be interesting to spend a couple of days in Milan. It is very commercial, but does have some interesting sights and excellent restaurants. It's very easy to day trip to Lake Como (about 1 hour by train) and is convenient for getting to Malpensa for your flight home. If you decide to stay in Milan and want to see Leonardo's Last Supper, reserve ASAP. I stayed in Milan for a couple of days before my 2002 Village Italy tour (started in Verona then) and really enjoyed it.
