Villa rentals?

Looking for suggestions for cottage or villa rentals for 4 adults in October 2014. Would prefer option to walk to a town for food and fun. Also looking for a good spot to launch day trips in the surrounding areas.

It would be helpful if we knew which region you're interested in. In the meantime, giving you a broad spectrum, I suggest VRBO.com. Also google "Villas in Italy." Homeaway.com

You've also got Agriturismo.com (click on the IT in top right to change to ENG). Booking.com is the largest website for accommodations of all kinds worldwide.

I've also found a bunch of properties listed on Craigslist.com clicking on cl worldwide and then europe.

We use cars to drive to town, as most villas and agriturismos are out in the hilly countryside. In many rural areas, the restaurants are actually few and far between.

Maybe others have had good experience with it, but I wouldn't book anything using Craigslist or something like that due to the chance of getting scammed. I presume that arranging a rental using VRBO.com or homeaway.com would be safer in that respect. One issue that was pointed out to me was that in many cases, a "walk into town" is not very easy since in many cases (Tuscany hill towns) it will be uphill all the way. But some cottage/villa rentals are near small villages that you can walk to, to buy groceries or go to a restaurant. The info in VRBO.com and homeaway.com usually mentions these options. I just booked a place near Castel San Gimignano (a small village, about 12km from San Gimignano), using homeaway.com.
