Emailed Villa Elena to confirm our reservation Oct. 14 through October 16. Response was "VILLA ELENA IS CLOSED. VILLA ELENA IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION PROBLEMS. I HAVEN'T ROOM FOR YOU. PLEASE CONTACT ANOTHER BEB OR HOTEL ." I guess they weren't going to let us know until we arrived. Anybody know of any last minute hotels in the area?
Have you tried Albergo Milano? We loved our stay there. They have rooms in the main hotel as well as in a nearby annex. We stayed in the main hotel in a lake-front room and we sat out on the balcony every afternoon enjoying the view. Our room was very comfortable and clean and I would not hesitate to stay there again. I understand that their dinner service is also very good though we didn't get a chance to try it.
Menaggio, a short ferry ride across the lake, has more hotels than Varenna. You could try there. Weekends often are busier, so you should get right on it. There is a good hostel in Menaggio, not far from the ferry dock.
Thanks Swan & Sheron- About the time I was posting to warn other folks about Villa Elena, I was emailing hotels listed in Rick's Varenna pages. Albergo del Sol has a room and we booked it. With a bit of luck, this will turn out to be a more expensive (by almost 3 times) but better hotel. No matter what, we are determined to enjoy the lake and the beauty it offers.
David, glad you found another accommodation. You will love Varenna & Lake Como. Have a great trip.
