In planning our itinerary, I am wondering if we should reserve an entire day or 1/2 a day for Villa D'Este? We would like to be there first thing in the morning. We love the gardens in Europe, however, this one looks extremely large and would take some time to view. Comments please. Thank you.
One half day should be adequate for your visit to Ville d' Este. It is not really that large, but more steep with many stairs. We have been there 2 times and really liked each visit. For the afternoon you could visit the nearby Hadrian's Villa for a taste of Roman landscaping. Buon viaggio,
I agree 1/2 day is plenty of time to view the gardens and the many water fountains/falls. One of the most beautiful places I have seen. You can get some great photos on a nice day.
A half day is adequate but that does not include traveling/. RoninRome.com has great, detailed, step by step directions on how to get there is you are uncertain.
Here's the link to Ron In Rome's excellent page on a Tivoli day trip.
Just back from Tivoli. Two or three hours would be enough to see and enjoy Villa D'este, Which is indeed steep, but you should add to that the three/four hours required for a round trip from Roma, waiting times included, regardless of whether you use trains or buses. Plus, in Tivoli you should also see Villa Adriana, which would add another two/three hours (adding the visit to Tivoli transfer times.) So it would take a whole day. Enjoy! We did.
