Villa d'Este or Hadrian's Villa

We're leaving for Rome in a week and I'm trying to decide whether or not to do both Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, or just one. We will be traveling with our nine-year-old twin daughters and right now I'm leaning toward Villa d'Este (seems like a fair hassle getting to Hadrian's Villa.) Is it a mistake to get that close and not see both, or do you all think the children will be happier if we do just one? Thanks, Marisa

With children that age I'm not sure I'd try and do both. The trip out there is usually at least an hour so it can make for a long day. I'd probably opt for Villa D'Este. Kids seem to like the fountains and flowers more than the ruins (At least that's been my experince). Villa D'Este is also just off them main square and there's plenty of shops, food, etc. to see and do close by. I just think there's more stimuli there. If they're up for ruins, head to Ostia Antica on another day. These two links may help you ****** http://tinyurl.com/tivoli-daytrip ***** http://tinyurl.com/ostia-antica ****** Good Luck!

I was going to suggest Ostia Antica as well, especially if they love running around. And it's a lot easier to get to from Rome.

Except that O Antica and Villa d'Este are not comparable nor similar. The kids would love the fountains and so would you and it will take a lot of time to see everything. It is a little time consuming to get there but it is easy. Just follow Ron's very detail directions/

Thanks for the responses - we are headed to Ostia the day before and you're correct, I expect they will love running around the ruins :)

I have been to both Ostia Antica and Villa D Este and Hadrian's Villa. I enjoyed all, but especially the Villa D'Este with its beautiful fountains and the layout of the gardens. Hadrian's Villa is also a great example of a Roman Villa, but if you don't have time for this, you will see examples of Roman Architecture in Rome too.(not necessarily the same, but they opened up a Villa in central Rome). Ostia Antica, the old port of Rome, is very interesting and they have recently excavated and found an old boat from the Romans. But I would do whichever is more interesting and nearer to where you will travel or stay. Have a GREAT TRIP.
