My wife and I are staying at Ripetta 25, next to Piazza del Popolo. After a morning of touring the Vatican, we are planning on going back to our hotel to change clothes and grab a quick lunch in the area. We then plan to head over to Villa Borghese Gardens for a little relaxation and people watching. If possible we would love to be able to walk (it appears to be about a 20 minute walk) to the start of the park. Does anyone know if walking is our best option? Also, where exactly is a good point of entrance for us based on our location? Then once we arrive, we plan on either walking or else renting a bike and take a stroll, I assume there is easy to follow signs in order for us to navigate thru the park? Thanks for the tips!
Yes you can walk. I did it....
I got off the metro at Piazza Pololo (Flaminio stop) and walked.
The park is very nice - keep in mind that Borghese is at the other end of the park.
If you have a Rome map, that will heip you thru the park very nicely. (signs were not
really clear to us and far between)
At the north end of Piazza del Popolo, cross the street, turn slightly right and head up the stairs. Bear left and across the piazza, where it should be fairly obvious you are entering the park. Go up more stairs, and you will emerge into Piazzale Napoleone, from which you can branch out into the park. These are not really "gardens" in a formal, flowery way. It is signed but it can be confusing. If you head toward the Cafe dell'Orologio, there is a bike rental place nearby. Like everyone else, just ask directions if you get turned around or confused. It's a big park but very safe and pleasant.
A few years back some friends and I rented rowboats at the lake. It's a great place for a stroll, you can rent different kinds of transportation or ride around on the very touristy trenino (little train) if you are desperately tired and reasonably sure you will never see your fellow strollers again.
When we visited the Borghese Gallery 2 years ago, we had to rush to get to our Underground Tour of the Colosseum, so we didn't get to find this, but we are doing this on our upcoming trip. There is a Zoo on what used to be part of the Borghese Grounds? Here's some information from the Internet:
Bioparco di Roma is a 17-hectare zoological garden located on part of the original Villa Borghese estate in Rome, Italy. There are 1114 animals of 222 species maintained.
Has anyone been there? I love zoos and would love to visit this. Any tips or comments?
If we enter from the north end near Piazza del Popolo, does anyone have an idea as to where exactly the exit will be that will be come out if we just continue to walk through the park? I'm just looking to try and plan where to go next based on where we will be coming out so we will not have to do much backtracking. Thanks!
I did my first ever Segway at the Gardens - great fun!
