Vikey - Rome

Good afternoon, everyone,
We just booked an apartment thru Booking.com in Navona, Rome area and the manager just sent us a message that we needed to go on to Vikey.it to fill out paperwork. I also believe that we need to send in a picture or a picture of our passport. I have yet to go on the Vikey sight, but thought I would come here first to ask if anyone has done this before or should I be worried about sending our information this way. We have never been to Rome.... or Italy in general so I don't know if this is normal or not. The hotel we were going to stay with only asked us to provide a passport once we arrived.
Thank you for your help.

I'm not familiar with Vikey, but this sort of thing happens rather often when you're renting an apartment. Unlike hotels, apartments don't usually come equipped with photocopiers, so this is a way for the manager to efficiently obtain the information needed to comply with Italian law.

I had to use Vikey for a small apartment I booked via booking.com in Milano, both in 2022 and 2023 (same apartment). It is self-check-in, so you do not see anybody, just receive codes to withdraw the key from a keysafe. All went very smoothly.

Did not have to send picture of myself or passport, just fill in passport number. I have a Dutch passport, however. Do not know if procedure is different for non-EU nationalities. To me, it is equivalent to showing passport in hotel.

I will be using it for apartment check-in next month. It's just a tool to handle contactless check-in.

Thank you. I believe the management is meeting us there with the keys, it might be contactless so that does make sense. I feel better knowing that this is normal.
