I read that there is a splendid view of Old Florence from the Boboli gardens. If so, where in the gardens? Is it as good (or better) than Michelangelo piazza down the road? Are the Boboli gardens worth a visit? Is there a charge? How long does it take to walk from Pitti Palace to Michelangelo piazza?
I dont know about Boboli but the view from Piazza Michelangelo is very nice. Take the bus to it and then walk back down. The small church near Michelangelo is also very nice.
Which bus would I take and where do I pick it up?
we thought the Giardini Bardini much prettier than the Boboli. when we went in June there was a combined ticket both both. the idea is to walk up through the Bardini gardens, exit through the back gate, cross the road and enter the Boboli gardens. we varied this by walking up to San Miniato church above Piazza Michaelangelo before going to Boboli. there are wonderful views from many points on this walk, but my favorite was from a view terrace in the Bardini gardens. from the top of the Boboli gardens there is a nice view in the other direction, over the Tuscan countryside.
There are a number of excellent views from the Boboli Gardens. As I haven't been to Piazza Michaelangelo, I can't compare them. Entering through Palazzo Pitti entrance you face a hill and the garden. Looking back, you will soon find yourself looking over the Palace and able to see Florence from the amphitheatre. I recall there were also some pretty good views from the area of the coffee house and from around Chestnut meadows. My favorite views however were not of Florence, but in the opposite direction from the area of the porcelain museum and the garden of the Cavalier, which sits above Florence's old wall. Map of the garden here at http://www.planetware.com/map/boboli-gardens-map-i-lmn.htm It's a pretty big garden. We enjoyed it, we spent about 3 hours there. After two days in museums and churches, it was nice to spend time outside. There's also lots of art in the gardens. As I recall, in part, this is where Michaelangelo learned to sculpt. There is a fee to enter the garden. It's part of the Pitti Palce. Same line. But we opted for the gardens alone rather than with the palace. I don't recall the price. Hope this helps. Have fun.
From the train station you take a fun bus ride across the Arno River, bus #13. It's 1 euro round trip and takes about an hour. Stopping at Piazza Michangelo and near villa Bardini Gardens. Also suggested is taking the bus up and walking back.
I have been to both Boboli Gardens and Piazzala Michelango. Both have extremely good views of the city, but from different perspectives. Forgive me as I give a "photographer's view." The piazza has what I would consider the image you would most associate with Florence: it is on a bit of a hill to the south and east, and has an unobstructed view of the city and the Arno. Boboli Gardens is a bit more due south, also with some spectacular views. As a photographer, I really enjoyed Boboli because it allowed me to frame the cityscape, and gave me some shots that others might not get[INVALID] my favorite was near the coffee house. Boboli gets mixed reviews, but I loved it.
