Video taping a tour guide, correct or not?

Hello everyone! About 20 or so years ago I was on an Italian bus tour and was video taping the tour guide on the bus when suddenly he wagged his finger at me to stop! Was this a no-no on my part and, if so, what is the correct protocol? Is it still the same or not? Thanks!

Same as always best to ask permission first. Read any rules and regulations that come with your booking.

The best thing is to ask. My husband likes to video instead of shooting pictures and he always asks if it is okay. Sometimes the guide says yes, other times, the guide doesn’t want to be taped.

Probably true anywhere. Its just polite to ask first.

You should always ask permission before taking a photo or video of someone.

Some tour guides might not want video of their tour as this is their livelihood and may not want their personal tour all over the internet or in the hands of competitors.

I recall hanging out with some tour guides from competing companies at Dam Square in Amsterdam, having casual conversation before going off on our respective tours. In Amsterdam at least, it seemed like a rather cut-throat business. One guide even attempted to "poach" me from a tour i had already paid for! Lots of talk about guides with little knowledge of the town, companies trying to lure good guides from other outfits, guide-to-customer ratios; lots of interesting talk, but no talk about recording. So I guess this post is off-topic.
