We are interested in taking a compact camcorder with us to Italy but have no clue which one to purchase. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I personally just bought a Canon VIXIA HG20. It's fairly expensive ($600), but it's an amazing camera.
For less money check out here.
It really depends on what quality of video you want to return with. Many of the point and shoot cameras offer video capabilities of some sort which are really quite good. Some of the newer DSLR cameras also now offer high definition video which is as good as any video camera and this comes along with the benefit of having your DSLR to take stills.
You might want to check out the folks at CNET.com for reviews of video cameras.
Happy travels.
Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with a Cannon or Sony. I have the Cannon.
I took my Canon point and shoot that has video capability. I was very happy with the quality of the video I got. Having that option was great for places that would allow you to video but would not allow flash photography, and I didn't have to carry 2 different cameras. I just made sure that I had a number of large capacity memory cards as video takes up a lot of space.
