Victor Emmanuel monument / stairs

Due to hip/knee pain in my right leg, I tend to save my energy on vacation for “mandatory” stairs and generally avoid “elective” stairs. However, I’d like to visit the Rome from the Sky elevator at the Victor Emmanuel monument. I believe the elevator starts from somewhere up in the monument, not down at street level. Clearly, I’m going to have to climb some stairs!

Does anyone know how many steps there are, and if there are hand railings? Also, does anyone know if the steps have a standard rise (and by standard, I’m thinking of average steps in the U.S. that have a rise of about 7”), or if they’re shallower? It’s hard to tell from Google Street View.

Thanks for any insights. I’ve meant to visit the monument on my last three visits to Rome, but it’s always gotten dropped for something else. As my BF will be with me this time (and it’ll be his first time in Rome), I’d really like to take him up to see the view.

I don't know if it's still accessible, but if you walk around the Monument, toward the Forum, on your left, there used to be a gradual ramp up the backside to the terrace where there's a cafe. You might check with your hotel to see if it's still open.

We were just there this past week but I don't remember how many steps, which is funny because my family and I were often counting steps in some of the landmarks we visited! There were quite a few however and I don't believe there were railings on the steps outside up into the main entrance. However, the steps aren't steep, and weren't too bad of a climb if you pace yourself. And yes, the elevator does start from up in the monument. Once you get inside, there are more steps up to the outside balconies, but there were railings inside.

I vaguely remember a ground level elevator tucked in the far right hand corner as you face it. Could have been for staff only. Just don't remember that well.
