Our daughter is on the European Forces swim team and heading to Vicenza for a meet. We have been to Venice several times can anyone give us some other great day trips from here. We are there for a week and have swim in the mornings so getting late starts most of the time. Any insight into Lucca?
Thanks!
Lucca is quite a distance.
In Vicenza itself the Teatro Olimpico is well worth a visit and the Villa Rotonda.
You'll find two historical cities around the corner: Padova (less than half an hour by cheap regional train) and Verona (less than one hour).
An easy and interesting trip is also the Villa Emo in Fanzolo, just some 100 metres from the tiny railway station (http://www.villaemo.org/index.asp?lingua=EN for information).
I assume you know http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en for planning train trips?
Since circumstances dictate your departure time, Padua and Verona are both very good options. You can stay late for dinner in either one and still be back in Vicenza in plenty of time for a good nights rest. Vicenza itself is a marvelous place and you can easily spend several afternoons getting to know the city.
There are some beautiful small towns in the Colli Euganei, famous for Prosecco and other wines. An afternoon wine tour might be a good option. Some are better by car. Castelfranco Veneto is a nice short daytrip.
Melissa, there are two small towns very near Vicenza that sounded very interesting to me, and I had hoped to visit them when I stayed in Verona in 2014, but never made it. One is Cittadella, which is just 24 minutes by train from Vicenza, and the other is Bassano del Grappa, which is a little further. They both sounded quaint, beautiful and unique to me when I did my own trip planning. You might check them out on TA or elsewhere.
Thank you all so much! Great info!!
I've been to Bassano del Grappa, it's a lovely town with a covered wooden bridge among other sites. Good suggestion, Larry.
I don't know what the weather is like right now, but if you have a sunny day you might try Pescheria del Garda.
40 minutes from Vicenza
As previously mentioned, Peschiera del Garda would be a nice day trip as would Desenzano. If you have a car and like visiting villas with beautiful gardens, Villa Pisani in Stra' (near Padova) would be a nice day trip. It has a hedge maze on its grounds. The interior of the villa is also beautiful. There are several other Palladian villas in that area worth visiting. However, you might fall in love with Vicenza and decide to spend more time there than originally planned.
