Viareggio/Pisa Day Trip from Florence

Hi all,

It was suggested to a friend of mine to visit the beaches of Viareggio. We will be in Florence in September and I am wondering a) in your experience, is it worth it to travel the 2(?) hours there (we will be in Rome for almost the whole month and plan to visit Ostia and Sperlonga, so I dont see the need for another beach trip unless someone can convince me that it's unique) and b) is it possible to do a Viareggio AND Pisa day trip from Florence in the same day. Which one would we visit first? Lastly, I know there are trains, but if we wanted to take a bus just to experience the countryside on a slower pace, is there one that goes to all three places? Thanks!

I can't give you specific advice because I haven't personally done it. One of my co-workers just returned from Italy and did just what you are describing.

Is Viareggio worth it if you will have already been to the beach? That is something only you can decide. I know my brother and sister did a daytrip to Viareggio and they were not all that impressed. It is all relative, as they were comparing it to beaches here in California.

My co-worker climbed the tower in Pisa and she said it was fantastic. She was happy she did the daytrip.

Viareggio is not worth the effort. It's completely a beach town and otherwise uninteresting. Only go there if you're desperate for the beach.
