Can you hike around Vesuvius without a guide? Any info on getting to and around Vesuvius would be very helpful.
Also, is there a way to plug in a "buzz" word in the Traveler's Helpline that will pull up particular topics without having to peruse all?

AFAIK, it's necessary to have a guide when hiking up Vesuvius. I'm not sure it's possible to hike "around" Vesuvius as the trail only leads to the top and then around the crater part way (past a few souvenir & food stands of course).
To "pull up particular topics" you might have a look at Kent's method of searching the Helpline. It works well!

You don't need a guide to hike (more like walking) up Mt. Vesuvius and around the rim.
