Does anyone have any recommendations for vespa tours of Tucscany region that leave from Florence? Our family of 5 consists of my husband and I and our 18, 16 & 14 year old kids. Everything I have found sounds like you have to be a minimum of 18 to even go on the tour. I was thinking the younger 2 could ride with an adult, but have not found any that allow this. Any suggestions or recommendations for other Tuscany tours, such as just renting a car for the day instead, would be appreciated!
The first issue is are you and your husband experience motorcycle riders. If not, Tuscany is not a good place to learn especially if riding double. There is a reason that they don't allow a double.
Unless you have experience driving scooters or motorcycles, my advice is “DON’T DO IT.” Scooters look cute but you must be familiar with Driving with a passenger on the back needs even more experience because they are more difficult to handle. Add to that the traffic in a foreign city such as Florence can be a nightmare. Just rent a car for the day or take a tour that piques your interest and leave the driving to someone else.
I'll add to the Vespa chorus of DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
As for renting a car, you would need to buy an IDL for each person listed as drivers for the car before you leave home . Then you'd have to learn all of the laws pertaining to ZTLs, and speeding cameras. And of course the driver would have to abstain from any wine sampling.
If it's just for a day, I'd just sign up for one of the van/bus tours.
We once crawled at about 5mph up the whole hill to Volterra behind a bunch of tourists on a vespa tour who had obviously no experience and alas no manners, so they didn't pull over every mile or so to let the cars they were stacking up get by. The road winds and there was a bit of traffic coming down so passing was not possible.
I grew up on Vespas and motorcycles in Florence since the age of 14. It’s not something that you learn in half hour. My father spent many weeks teaching me on his old Vespa before he bought me one. Still, in spite the training and the experience on my own two wheelers, in several occasions, my ass polished the asphalt of many Florence or Tuscan roads. And I was lucky. Two of my best friends didn’t reach the age of 20, and are resting in peace since the fatal Vespa accidents that took their lives. If you and your family members are not experienced motorcycle riders, you shouldn’t go on those rides.
Thank you all - I think we will stick to taking a bus tour or renting a car:)
