Hi, I will be flying from Rome to Amsterdam on March 5th with the flight due to leave at 6.10am. I've had several very early starts like this at various European airports over the past couple of years (seems to be a consequence of having to get to a European hub in time to catch a flight back to Vancouver) but this will be my first experience of Rome/Fiumicino. Does anyone have a sense of what is a realistic time to show up at the airport in order to drop off a bag and go through security? Thanks for any suggestions.
If you can check in online and just have to do the bag drop 4am.
We had 6 am flights in both Warsaw and Catania. Its worth finding out when the airline counters open. For us, both places, they didn't open until 4 am in spite of suggestions to arrive 3 hours early. Yes, check in online, if possible. In our experience, in recent years, we've not been allowed to do so. We always get a message to check in at the airport.
Rome to AMS would be considered a "domestic" [intra-Schengen] flight, so two hours in advance should be fine. Considering the distance between Rome and the airport, a hotel at the airport would make sense.
Check in positions for intra Schengen flights open 2 hours prior to departure, so no point to get there before 4:10am.
Thanks for the input. I don't think I can bear to pay the price the Hilton is asking for the night before I fly just for the absolute certainty of being able to walk to the airport but I will book a hotel nearby which operates a very early shuttle and aim to be at the airport between 4.15 and 4.20 (I don't need to be the first in the queue!) Thanks again, Zak
If you are staying downtown Rome the preceding nights before your flight, I wouldn’t bother to change hotels just to be closer in the last night. Just stay at the same hotel and ask the hotel to call a taxi for you. The taxi ride from the city center to the airport at that time in the morning when there is no traffic is about 30 min.
