Verona vs. Mantua

I am traveling with a group to Northern Italy. In Verona, we have a group walking tour, followed by a free afternoon. The next day, we have the option of independent exploration of Verona or a day trip to Mantua. The Mantua trip includes a walk around the city followed by lunch and free time for exploration.

Any recommendations on which to choose for that free day - Verona or Mantua? Also, any suggestions on what to see or do in Verona would be great.

Thanks.

We were in Verona recently & really enjoyed our time there. We bought the Verona Card and visited most of the sites included with the card in one day, as we had other plans for our other days. Our favorites were the Castelvecchio, Torre Dei Lamberti (great views from the top), and the Arena di Verona. We also took the Funicolare di Castel S. Pietro (not included with the card, but not expensive) for an amazing view of the city. Our favorite gelateria in Verona is Gelateria La Romana--yum!

I've never been to Mantua, but that sounds like a nice option. I love exploring new areas, so would probably use the free afternoon in Verona to visit some sites and then go to Mantua the next day. Hopefully others will have been to both places & can advise you. :)

Have a great trip!

Won't you have all day in Verona the first day? If it was me, I would go to Mantua. Haven't been to Mantua in some years, but we enjoyed it. The Ducal Palace is wonderful, and it was a nice town to walk around. I have not been to Verona, so can't comment on that one!

I like Mantua more than Verona. Also the cooking in Mantua is more distintive.

Just be sure that your time in Verona includes the church of San Zeno, easily done in your free afternoon, if not on your tour. In Mantua, don’t miss the Palazzo Te, quite different from many of the sights you will see elsewhere.

Both are worthy of a visit....I like Verona the best. I agree about seeing the San Zeno church. There is also Museo Castelvecciho (spelling?) that we enjoyed. Piazza Bra (with the amphitheater) and Piazza del erbe are wonderful.
