Is train the recommended way to travel to Florence from Verona? (vs bus)
Thanks.
i loved the trains, it was quick and cheap if you prebuy your tickets on trenitalia.com
thanks.
Linda,
Yes, train is absolutely the best way to travel that route. The trip will be about 2.5 hours, depending on which train you use, and there will usually be one change in either Padova or Bologna. Many of the trains on that route will be Freccia high speed (300 kmH), which require compulsory reservations (the reservations are provided with P-P tickets). The reservations are train, date and time specific, so you MUST only board the train specified on your ticket, or risk a hefty fine which will be collected on the spot! If one of the trains on your route is a Regionale, you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or again risk a hefty fine!
Note that your departure station will be Verona Porta Nuova and your arrival station Firenze S.M. Novella. Are you up-to-speed on the concept of changing trains in Italy?
Happy travels!
Thanks for the info. I have not changed trains before. We will be in Pescantina and need to get back to Verona to take the train to Florence.
Changing trains just means you get off one, find the track for the other one, and board it when it pulls in to the station.
When we did this (Verona to Florence) it turns out is was considerable cheaper ( like 20 euros per person less) to change at Bologna rather than Padua. I believe it is because you are on the expensive train (Frecce) for a shorter time. This was with full-price tickets bought the dayof travel. With Super Economy tickets bought in advance it wouldn't make any difference.
Linda,
You may find it helpful to have a look at THIS website or THIS website for information on travel by rail in Italy.
Changing trains is usually quite easy, but changing platforms may involve a trip down stairs to a tunnel (Sotto Passagio) and then up more stairs. When you disembark from the first train you take, check the electronic board looking for the train number of your next train, and which platform/track no. (Binario) this is departing from. The destination shown may or may not be the one you're going to, depending on whether that's the last stop of that particular train. You can also check the large paper charts which will be on each platform. There will be one for Arrivi and one for Partenza. It's better to rely on the electronic boards, as departure and arrival platforms can (and do) change at times.
Note that when travelling on the Freccia or other trains that have compulsory reservations, you will have an assigned Car No. (Carrozza) and an assigned seat no. (Posti). You MUST sit in the assigned location. You may also find it helpful to watch THIS short video which covers some of the things you'll be dealing with.
Cheers!
There is a direct (yes there are stop, but no change over) train from Verona to Florence. Just make sure you buy your ticket at least the day before, so you know that you have it and validate your ticket on the train plate form before boarding the train. They will check and I've witness the fee being as high as €50. But other then that it's a very relaxing train ride.
Thanks you everyone for the info. I really appreciate it.
