Verona struggle

Hello experts. my family of 4 adults are planning a trip to Switzerland/Italy in September 2024 for 10 days. We are starting in Zurich, staying in Lucerne and then driving or training down to Lake Maggiore (Ascona probably) for 4 days. We really then want to go to Verona but it seems like it is too complicated to get there from Ascona (train is 3-4 hours and need to go through Milan).
we could rent a car on the lake but renting car in Switzerland and dropping off later in Italy (for return to U.S. from Milan) is super expensive so this adds extra complexity. We could maybe stay on Italy side of lake (Stresa) and rent car there, but then I think we are too far removed from sightseeing Bellizona castles.

The question is, are we trying to do too much on this trip and perhaps should we skip Verona? and just stick to the Lake Maggiore region.

is it so worth it to see Verona that we should drive all the way back to Zurich to return the car?

Whether you want to see Verona or not in this trip is your decision. Also I don’t know how long you have to see Verona ((you need a full day to see it all). For sure I can tell you that driving from Ascona/Locarno to Verona will take you just as long as going by train (or most likely longer), once you factor in the time necessary for the rental paperwork, the time necessary to drive there, make at least a pit stop along the way, and finding parking in Verona. I don’t think there are rental offices in Stresa anyhow.
